Kitchen Backsplash
Whether it be a kitchen backsplash or a bathroom backsplash, the installation is relatively the same. These provide both beauty and protection to either room and will last for years to come, if it is installed properly.
There are certain tools that are required for the installation of these and they are found at most hardware and home improvement stores across the United States.
However, it does not matter if you have the tools if you don't know how to use them. Therefore, a professional installer should be used for this sometimes crucial aspect of home construction. Usually they have all the tools that would be needed as well as knowing how to do it and the tricks for doing it.
These tools will include a wet saw, nips, certain and specific types of trowels, and specific types of materials that is used. There are also specifically made pieces of the backsplash tile that is to be used in certain areas of the backsplash. For example, the bull nose piece is for the edges.
Back to the tools, the wet saw is a saw that utilizes water in order to cut through the hard ceramic. This keeps the blade cool which allows it to cut. These are very crucial in any tile based job and if one is doing the installation themselves, then be sure to wear eye protection when using it. The trowels have specific notches or groves built into them. This allows the proper spreading of the adhesive thus, keeping every thing even and not overly gluing. Nips are specifically used to fine trimming ceramic tile. They are used very sparingly and if one is attempting to trim too much at one time, odds are the tile will break. A few of the other well known tools for a job like this include a scoreboard for scoring the tile in order to snap them, and various sponges.
Although the actual installation is not that hard, it is the experience of the installer that will make the difference between a good looking job and a great looking job. Most home owners that attempt this will certainly be able to do the actual job, and it will look good. However, there may or may not be trouble over time, such as tile coming loose and water getting behind the tile.
This is why most installations are done by the professional installer. Not only do they know the tricks, they are also very quick about it. They can let a home owner know of any trouble spots and can give a very accurate idea of the overall costs associated with it.
Therefore, when installing a kitchen backsplash, a home owner may be able to do the job but, a professional installer should at least be consulted first.
