Inkjet Printers

Inkjet printers are the most commonly used computer printers these days by the general people. Consumers find in them a very high quality output. Apart from that they are able to print in a variety of colors and can be easily operated by everyone. The most important thing about them is that they are of low price and hence affordable. Their mode of operation is by propelling different sized particles of liquid ink, which is a molten material, onto the pages.

The modern day inkjet printer is the revised version of several earlier versions and is based on the progress made by its predecessors. In the worldwide market only a few companies are there which can claim their dominance as the most highly sold ones. Hewlett Packard, Canon, Lexmark, and Epson are only a few companies and can be credited to have contributed to the development of the modern day version of the inkjet printers.

Inkjet printers basically use three technologies. They are, Thermal, Piezoelectric, and Continuous flow. The thermal inkjet printer uses a technology where the print cartridges have a series of small chambers that are heated electronically and constructed by photolithography. Here aqueous ink is used which is a water based dye or pigment.

Inkjet printers used mostly for industrial purposes generally employ piezoelectric technology. Here instead of a heating element there is an ink filled chamber behind each nozzle. These however are bit expensive but result in better print definition.

The continuous types are used mainly on a commercial place for printing sensitive elements like barcodes or marking products and packages. This technology involves creating continuous ink droplets through the Plateau Raleigh instability. This is one of the oldest of inkjet technologies in use and is considered to be fairly mature. There are three different types of inks used in these inkjet printers. They are solvent inks, UV-curable inks and dye sublimation inks, respectively.

Inkjet printers stick to two main design philosophies while designing the inkjet head. Firstly, it is the Fixed head and secondly the disposable head. The former is designed to last for a lifetime while the latter uses a head which is supplied as one of the parts of the replaceable ink cartridge.

Inkjet printers operate quietly and can print finer and smoother details as the print head resolution is larger. They do not need any warm up time and incur lower cost per page. But the disadvantage is that ink being expensive the overall cost becomes more. Also error messages are common that happen because of finer electronic components in the print head. The usages become limited when using aqueous ink, which fades away. Care must be taken to avoid even a small drop of water. The narrow nozzle of the inkjets has the possibilities of clogging.

Maintenance of the inkjet printers is very much essential to prolong its life. For consumers opting for photorealistic prints this is usually the best option.
