The devices usually respond to a number of different satellites that help in making them operate accurately at various places. In addition to ground stations, the GPS devices receive positioning signals from twenty four satellites that make their orbits once every day. In order for the signals to be more accurate, use is made of six orbital planes at an incline of forty five degrees.

It is the US Department of Defense that operates and monitors both the ground stations and satellites, and they were initially employed just for military endeavors, such as tracking military items and in combat operations. It was the need for great accuracy in such military operations that prompted the DoD to implement the use of GPS tracking system.

So one of the important features that all GPS devices have is the ability to locate things within a very short distance, at times just mere inches, since they are built using the same technology that the military use. The earlier devices had quite a wide margin of error, since they located things within a hundred meters. The increased accuracy has been enhanced by the use of Selective Availability, which was formerly used exclusively in military devices. It was in 2000 that the government passed laws that made it possible for the general public to benefit from this. Before, the Selective Availability signals used to be scrambled so that just the military could read these accurate signals.

Another common feature in the GPS devices is their compact sizes. Advanced technology makes it possible to build very small circuits, which merge a number of circuits into one through the use of integrated circuits. This does not just make them more portable but also more affordable for many people.

Another common feature in the GPS devices is known as Wide Area Augmentation Service beacon. The beacons, which are in every part of the country, help in giving more accurate readings as they help to determine the inaccuracies that result from atmospheric conditions and clock drift and hence make needed corrections.

Global Positioning System devices are gaining increased popularity. The features that are commonly used in these devices have become more advanced, which make the systems even more of a necessity for nearly everybody.
