A drug or alcohol addict did not usually become that way overnight. Many times, it was a build up over time and many times it was a traumatic event that had happened in their lives that has pushed them into this downward spiral.
The very absolute first stage in any treatment is the ability to notice and admit that there is a problem. Without this admission, the ability of the treatment to be successful will certainly be extremely low. After all, it is the addict that the burden rests on and therefore, it is the addict that must do all the work. It will be a tremendously long road that will be filled with plenty of pitfalls along the way but, if the addict is sincere enough, then the treatment has a high successful rate.
The beginning of actual treatment will usually consist of a detoxification time or period. This is followed by an in house treatment program that will attempt to change the person and their habits. It will be through counseling and behavior modifications. It is abstinence that is the primary goal for the addict. Fore, they will always be an addict but, whether they are a non-using or a using addict is entirely up to the addict themselves.
There are various treatments available to the addict and these programs will vary depending upon a few factors. Factors such as time length of taking the drugs or being an addict, and the amount of drugs taken. But, there is also the availability of location of the treatment programs, the cost of the program itself, the addicts personality and mental state, their spirituality influences, whether the addict has some sort of other illness, and a few other factors.
The twelve step program is the most common program that many folks have at least heard of. It begins with admittance, followed by recognizing a greater power, studying past problem areas, fixing these problem ares, learning a new lifestyle, and assisting others. It is a deeply spiritual program that calls upon help from god himself. It has proven to be successful in many cases.
There is another somewhat newer option that has created some success. This is through the use of drugs that block the drug of choice's effects. In effect, the addict could take the drug but, the past effects of the high that the drug would give would be completely blocked and thus, the addict would not feel the effects. This has had some success however, many times the addict would attempt to take more drugs searching for that high and this would cause an overdose.
Therefore, when it comes to addiction treatment, there are a few different types and styles to choose from. None are guaranteed to work but, the addict can make each and every one of them work.
