Getting to Know Your Auto Insurance

Sometimes reading about your car insurance policies feels like trying to master complex algebra or calculus. But things aren't that hard once you get to a decent understanding of a handful of key terms. Some of these are: Bodily Injury Liability, Comprehensive, Collision, and Property Injury Liability. They form the basis of what you need to know about automobile insurance.

Collision Coverage will be your friend if ever you require repairs or replacements, or in case your vehicle hits another one or damages somebody's property. The higher the deductible that you agree to, the lower your premiums are going to be.. If you're faulted for something, then you'll have to worry about how much it is, so plan ahead. Figure out what you can afford to pay out of your own pocket for repairs. $200? $700? More than a grand? It's like medical insurance: first you pay the deductible while the insurance company will cover the rest of the charges.

Another word in car insurance jargon you should learn is Comprehensive Coverage. Make sure you're well-educated about what this one means. This is your coverage against damage by fires, natural disasters (certain kinds), vandalism, theft, and so on. The deductible amount is going to be the same as it is with Collision. More money out of your pocket, less insurance premium. They go together.

It's not just these two coverage schemes you'll need to be familiar with; find out more about liability coverage as well. This is useful in case you rear-end someone's car, for example. Or if your foot hit the gas instead of the brake by accident and you knock over a mailbox. In these cases, the liability coverage will handle things by compensating for the damage. You liability coverage might, or could, include in its scope bodily injury as well as property damage.

Bodily Injury Coverage is a definite must. If an accident is your fault and it sent other people to the hospital and/or missed work because of it and they lost wages as a result, then money will be coming out of your own pocket. That is, if you haven't got the Bodily Injury Coverage. It should be pretty obvious to most people that the amounts of money we're talking about here can add up. This coverage will also be of help in case someone targets you with legal action. And remember that Bodily Injury Coverage is mandatory in some states.

Property Damage is another part of the liability coverage. Think about how much money it could cost you if your car smashes into someone's house by accident? Now think how crucial property damage insurance can be. You'll definitely need it. If you're forced to pay for repairing someone else's vehicle, property, or something like that, it will come in very handy. Property Damage coverage will also help you if you're slapped with a lawsuit.

No policy is perfect, and all of them offer varying degrees of coverage. You need to be aware of the basic coverage schemes and why they're so important. Remember, accidents aren't planned!
